It has been said to be careful for what you ask for because you just may get it. Keep that in mind next time you are out trying to find your dream job. David can never be accused of being lazy but it seems overzealousness often leads to rash decision making.
I remember as kids one Christmas, David was so impatient at the store fighting a crowd of last minute Chrstmas shoppers that he clawed his way to the counter like he was treking through thick African tall grass and grabbed the first .99 cent, pre-wrapped, gift box he could reach.
19 minutes later, he proudly presented it to the love of his 11 year old life, Evelyn. It woudn't have been so bad but Evie was playing with five of her girlfriends on the school yard swings when he gave her the early Christmas present. Now I would love to have a new pair of nose hair clippers but as it turned out Evie was less enthused. She took it as an insult and burst out in tears while her girlfriends burst out in laughter, shouting in surprising unison, "What an idiot".
Once in high school, Dave came late to a school assembly. As usual, he snuck in the side door between the bleachers just in time to hear the Senior Class President, Erin, ask for one last volunteer. He did not have a clue about why she was looking for help but that did not deter the self-proclaimed class clown from stepping forward with left arm waving like an island castaway flagging down a passing boat and shouting out,"I'll do it". 3 days later while the rest of us were enjoying an awesome New Years Eve party, oddly enough at Evie's house, Dave along with members of the Chess Club were babysitting 47 rowdy 7 to 10 year olds as part of a school fund raising project.
This latest episode has its genesis deep in the bowls of the LA Film Sceen, smack dab in the heart of the Sunset Strip. A few door down from the ROXY, my favorite night club, stands a two story yellow building. Look all you want but you will not find a single sign anywhere on it. Turns out to be a small but very successful film production company. I can't remember the name of it, sorry.
Dave always talked about wanting to work in the film industry. So, I was really happy for him when he got hired on by them as part of the set design crew. He is actually one hell of a carpenter. Things got even more interesting when he found out the shoot was taking place in Hawaii for the first 3 week of August. This meant he would be able to celebrate his 21st birthday in grand style.
phone rings. Hello. David, where are you? I just got back from your place and Sandy said you were in LA on a job interview. pause Sure, we'll be over in a few minutes. That's really great news. See you in 20.
What's up with your brother?
He just got hired to work on a Surfing Movie shoot as a set builder and will be spending 3 weeks in Hawaii! He wants us to come over and celebrate with him and Sandy.
When does he leave for Hawaii?
In 4 days from now on August 1st.
The 1st is in 5 days.
No it's not. Yes it is, genius. Today is the 27th showing fingers 28th, 29th, 30th, 31st and 5 days makes August 1st. There's 31 days in July, not 30. Put your fists together like this. he does as directed Now count. You have 8 knuckles and 6 indentations. Each knucle represents a month with 31 days and each indentation equals a 30 day month, 28 for February. Count left to right: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December.
